The Argentinian Embassy could not skip the tenth edition of the Malbec World Day and will be celebrating it from 14 to 21 November at more than 130 various wine specialty stores, shops and liquor stores in the Netherlands. The national pride of Argentina will be te center of the attention offered by more than 15 importers representing 25 wineries and more than 80 different Malbec labels.
Furthermore, an online Masterclass about the unique quality of the Argentinian grape Malbec and top wines of international allure is offered by the Embassy given by Dutch Magister Vini Fransbert Schermer.
Malbec World Day is celebrated in memory of the day in 1853 when President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento officially made it his mission to transform Argentina's wine industry. On that day he commissioned French soil expert Michel Aimé Pouget to bring new vines to the country, including malbec.
That turned out to be a good choice. If you ask wine lovers where the malbec wine comes from, they will say: "Argentina!" Hardly anyone knows that the grape originally comes from France. Malbec is the "icon grape" for Argentina.
Argentina is now the main producer of Malbec. With 109,686 hectares, Malbec represents 38.6% of the total red varieties and 22.4% of the country's total cultivated area in 2020. It is the variety that has grown the most in area: by 171 percent since the year 2000!
Celebratory events are held in more than 70 cities in 54 countries to mark the Malbec World Day.
In the Netherlands, the importers, Not Only Tinto, Damaro Wines, Robbers en van den Hoogen, Pallas Wines, Delta Wines, La Giostra del vino, Belgerette Wines, Wijnhuis Ten Bilt, Verbunt Verlinden, Salentein, Tamis, Wijnen Vino Via, Lijfering Dranken, Wijnimport Jos Rijnaarts, Gastrovino and Winestep in collaboration with wine shops throughout the country, offer more than 80 different malbec wines.
